A former biscuit maker from Bootle is serving with the United Nations as a peacekeeper.
Army Reservist Kingsman John Wild (19) has donned the organisation’s trademark blue beret and travelled to Cyprus with the 4th Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (4 LANCS) as part of the British Army’s longest running overseas mission.
John is one of 250 full time soldiers and Reservists now based in Nicosia, and two months into a six month tour of duty. 4 LANCS is supported by full-time personnel from the regiment’s second battalion – both of which recruit from across the North West.
John trained at military bases in Hampshire and Shropshire, alongside his fellow troops, for months before his deployment, learning how to manage helicopter crash sites and riots – incidents he could face while on the operation.
John used to work at Jacob’s biscuit factory in Aintree. He said: “I wanted to be more independent and choose to get more out of life for me and my girlfriend. The Army Reserve gave me the opportunity to do loads of exciting things and earn money whilst doing it. I am looking forward to getting home and spending the money I’ve earned here on a deposit on my first house.”
Every six months the Army contributes around 250 soldiers to the United Nations Forces in Cyprus as part of its mission to maintain the safety and security of the Buffer Zone that separates the Turkish north from the Greek south.
As part of the Operations Company in Cyprus Craig will be patrolling and maintaining a stable peaceful environment along the border which has split the island since 1974 and will be on the lookout and reporting any infringements or changes from the day-to-day norm.
During his time off John is able to explore Cyprus and enjoy the many activities it has including beach and water sports, mountain climbing, trekking and mountain-biking. John added: “There is just so much to do here, we learn new skills whilst having a good laugh with our friends.”
