Army Reservist and NW RFCA Military Selected Member Col Peter Jackson has been appointed Her Majesty The Queen’s Honorary Dental Surgeon.
Col Peter Jackson
Born in Preston in 1956, Col Jackson graduated from the University of Manchester as a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1980, and subsequently gained his D. Orth and Fellowship from the University of Birmingham Dental School.
Col Jackson joined the then Territorial Army, now the Army Reserve, in 1986 as Captain, Royal Army Dental Corps, 224 (North Staffs) Field Ambulance. During his time with 224 he deployed on exercises in various locations including the UK, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
Following appointments at 42 Infantry Brigade, 208 (Liverpool) Fd Hosp, 202 (Birmingham) Fd Hosp, he deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 as 2IC 208 Fd Hosp and was then appointed Commanding Officer. Completing his tour of command in 2013, he was appointed Assistant Director Training AMSTC.
At any one time there are two Queen’s Honorary Dental Surgeons appointed from senior officers of the RADC. It is the first time in approximately 30 years that a Reservist has been appointed QHDS. The appointment is honorary in the sense that they don’t do clinical dentistry but in practical terms QHDS takes it in turns with the Queen’s Honorary Surgeon, Physician or Nurse to command the medical response at Investitures at Buckingham Place, Windsor Castle or Holyrood House as required. In addition they have the honour of wearing the Royal Cipher on their rank slides.
In his civilian life, Col Jackson is Lead Clinician in an IDH specialist orthodontic practice in the North West of England.
