
Halifax born Marine Ben Kessie, 26, served as a Royal Marines Reservist at RMR Merseyside since October 2014. He transferred to full time service in early September and joined Taunton-based 40 Commando. Only two days later he deployed to the British Virgin Islands to assist in the disaster relief effort in the aftermath of hurricane Irma.

As a Reservist, Ben completed exercises in Norway and expeditions to the Himalayas as well as multiple training exercises around Europe.
Ben said: “The training I have completed as a Reservist has given me the tools to transfer to full time service and the confidence to then deploy immediately on an operation like this. Although this is a tragic situation it’s great to be in a position to help.”
Since his deployment to the British Virgin Islands Mne Kessie has conducted multiple patrols with the local police force and assisted in providing security at key locations around the capital of Tortola, Road Town. His troop are likely to assist in the delivery of crucial aid over the coming weeks.
Marine Kessie attended North Halifax Grammar School until 2008 and now lives in Manchester with his girlfriend. He enjoys climbing and mountaineering in his free time.
