This spring, Army Reservists from Liverpool and Bolton Batteries joined a select team on an unforgettable high-altitude expedition to climb Mera Peak (6,476m) in the Nepalese Himalayas – one of the highest trekking peaks in the world.
The team, part of Exercise NORTHERN NEPAL 25, spent over three weeks navigating dramatic terrain, building altitude resilience, and carrying out scientific research as part of a collaboration with GAPS (Global Action Plan Scientists). Among the contingent were soldiers from 208 (Liverpool) Battery and 216 (Bolton) Battery – both part of 103rd Regiment Royal Artillery (Lancashire Artillery Volunteers) – who demonstrated the professionalism and determination that exemplify the modern Army Reserve.
From initial briefings at Wolseley House to the adrenaline-pumping summit push under starlit skies, the journey demanded both physical endurance and mental resilience. The route tested every member of the team with steep ascents, sub-zero temperatures and moments of real challenge – both physical and personal.
The team also contributed to environmental research, gathering microplastic samples from glacial regions on behalf of international scientists – a reminder that military expeditions increasingly support global sustainability efforts.
For many, the highlight came during the final summit push, which began at midnight and culminated in panoramic sunrise views over Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu. “There was a moment at the summit where no one spoke – not from altitude sickness, but because we were completely stunned by the view,” one team member reflected.
Yet the expedition wasn’t all serious. From heated card games in remote tea houses to spontaneous snowball fights at 5,000m, the camaraderie was ever-present. As one reservist quipped, “We climbed a Himalayan giant, survived the world’s worst toilet, and somehow still found time for Bananagrams – if that’s not character building, I don’t know what is.”
This achievement highlights the value of the Army Reserve experience – adventure, development, and the opportunity to operate globally as part of a committed, professional team.
