The Mayor of Chorley, accompanied by the Rifles City Colonel in the North West Lt Col Ian Sawers, unveiled the VC Memorial Stone of Rifleman William Mariner VC 2 KRRC on the 100th anniversary of the action.  The short ceremony was attended by Reservists and Cadets from the town, the Rt Hon Lindsay Hoyle MP, Riflemen from 3 RIFLES based in Edinburgh, veterans and standard bearers from the RBL together with many other citizens. The setting for the action and the citation itself (read by 2Lt Mark Topham RIFLES) were described in some detail.  The actions of today’s Riflemen in recent conflicts were compared with Mariner’s exploit and reinforced by a recruiting display from the Regimental Support Team. They were further eulogised in the short address given by the Brigade Chaplain who also read the collects of both the KRRC and the Rifles.  The ceremony closed with the Act of Remembrance and the sounding of Last Post by a bugler from 3 RIFLES.
