Territorials Army Unit Types


If you want to know more about the types of Independent Units found in the North West and what they do, use the list below to learn more about their roles, training and equipment.

The Infantry

Royal Armoured Corps [RAC]

The Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry has squadrons based in Chester and Wigan that provide crews trained to operate the Army's latest Challenger Main Battle Tank.

Royal Artillery [RA]

103 Regiment Royal Artillery (V) based in Bolton, St Helens, Liverpool and Manchester provides Field Artillery Batteries which train to operate the Light Gun and AS90 and operate the very latest Hi-Tech command control and communications systems.

Royal Engineers [RE]

Royal Corps Of Signals [RSIGNALS]

33rd (Lancashire and Cheshire) Signal Regiment (Volunteers) based in Liverpool, Manchester, Blackburn and Runcorn has squadrons that operate and maintain the field communications of the Army using both voice and data transmissions on the latest Hi-Tech equipment.

Royal Logistic Corps [RLC]

Army Medical Services [AMS]

Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers [REME]

There are REME units based in Manchester and St Helens which help repair and maintain the Army's immense range of technical equipment, including tracked and wheeled vehicles, guns, guided weapons, radar and radios.

Adjutants General's Corps (Staff & Personnel Support) [AGC (SPS)]

The Adjutants General's Corps (SPS) look after the pay, personnel records and administration of the Army. Members of the AGC serve in the majority of the TA units throughout the North West as administrative and financial clerks.

Intelligence Corps [INT Corps]

Det of Military Intelligence based at Chorley have the operational task of collecting, collating and analysing information on enemy movements, strengths and intentions.

University Officers Training Corps [UOTC]

University Officers Training Corps in the North West are based in both Liverpool and Manchester and Salford Universities.

United Kingdom Special Forces

G Squadron 23 SAS is based in Manchester and recruits from Ex Regular, TA and Civilians.

Parachute Regiment 4 Para

4 PARA Assault Pioneer Platoon is based in St Helens in its operational and peacetime roles and provides the engineering support to the battalion. All soldiers are parachute trained and high level.

Royal Military Police

A Detachment of 116 Provost Company (V) 4 RMP is based in Manchester and is part of the Army's police force, providing a police, custodial and guarding service to the Army to ensure military efficiency.
