RMR Merseyside is sub-divided into three detachments to enable Reservists to be drawn from the main areas of population within the Midlands and North West. These are based next to the headquarters in Liverpool, and the detachment units at Manchester and Birmingham.
RMR Merseyside began as the Merseyside Centre RMFVR in 1949, formed aboard HMS Irwell, RNVR, Morpeth Dock, Birkenhead.

Monthly - Unit Weekend Training, all the detachments are drawn together to a central location. For example - live firing on Altcar Ranges.
Training and Specialisations within RMR Merseyside.
- Basic and Commando Training for new Recruits.
- Continuation Training for Commando trained ranks - e.g Mountain, Cold Weather, Live Firing.
- Specialist Training - RMR Merseyside is responsible for providing and training certain specialists. These are Tactical Air Control Party, Raiding Boat Squadron; Volunteers for the Special Boat Service (SBS); Heavy Weapons Section.
