| The Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) is an integral part of Britain's naval forces, comprising a corps of some 3,250 men and women who train in peacetime to enable the Royal Navy to meet its operational commitments in times of stretch, crisis, tension and war.
Although some 25% of RNR personnel have previously served in the Royal Navy, the majority are volunteers drawn from all walks of life, together with a small number of qualified Merchant Navy deck officers, civilian medical practitioners and nurses.
Serving Merseyside, North West England and North Wales, HMS EAGLET, shares a new building with RMR Merseyside in Liverpool.
Brief History
Mersey Division RNVR was established in Customs House, Liverpool in 1904 moving to HMS EAGLE, a 74 gun frigate at Brunswick Dock, in 1911.
Mersey Division was mobilised in 1914 to form part of the Royal Naval Division, serving at Gallipoli, Vimy Ridge, Passchendale and Cambrai. To avoid confusion with a newer HMS EAGLE, the frigate was renamed HMS EAGLET in 1919 and replaced by a first World War sloop - HMS SIR BEVIS (renamed EAGLET) in 1926 which was berthed at Salthouse Dock. During the second World War, EAGLET became the flagship of Commander-in-Chief Western Approaches. In 1972 HMS EAGLET moved ashore to a new HQ at Princes Dock. In 1993, EAGLET received freedom of the city of Liverpool. Lt Cdr I E Fraser VC RNR and CPO I Lynch GC BEM are amongst its most famous "old boys".
