A Royal Marine Reserve is a commando trained General Reserve. All the volunteers within the RMR pass through the same rigorous Commando Course as their regular Royal Marine counterparts.
The volunteers who make up the RMR are from varied backgrounds and are drawn from all walks of civilian life.
RMR Merseyside is sub-divided into three detachments to enable Reservists to be drawn from the main areas of population within the Midlands and North West. These are based next to the headquarters in Liverpool, with detachments at Manchester, Birmingham and Nottingham.
RMR Merseyside began as the Merseyside Centre RMFVR in 1949, formed aboard HMS IRWELL, RNVR, Morpeth Dock, Birkenhead.
Unit Headquarters
Today RMR Merseyside consists of a Unit Headquarters based in Liverpool. The Headquarters is operated by a small staff of Royal Marines Officers and NCOs drawn from the Regular Corps.
The Headquarters is responsible for the administration, organisation and direction of the Reservists' training.
Unit Training
Training within the unit is directed by the Unit HQ. Training takes place:

Two hours every Tuesday night, conducted independently at each Detachment. |
| Monthly |
Unit Weekend Training, all the detachments are drawn together to a central location. |
For example - live firing on Altcar Ranges.
Training and Specialisations within RMR Merseyside.
- Basic and Commando Training for new Recruits.
- Continuation Training for Commando trained ranks - e.g Mountain, Cold Weather, Live Firing.
- Specialist Training - RMR Merseyside is responsible for providing and training certain specialists. These are Tactical Air Control Party, Raiding Boat Squadron; Volunteers for the Special Boat Service (SBS); Heavy Weapons Section.
